QUEENS, NY – Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz today announced that Jonathan Perez, 34, has been charged with robbery and other crimes for allegedly grabbing an 11-year-old girl, dragging her into an alleyway and robbing her of cash and personal belongings on Sunday, July 25, 2021 in Jackson Heights, Queens.
District Attorney Katz said, “Nothing’s more important than ensuring that our children are safe on our streets. Because of this defendant’s alleged actions, an 11-year-old’s early morning trip to the grocery store became a nightmare. Now apprehended, the defendant will face justice in our Courts.”
Perez, of Dexter Court, in Queens is being held pending arraignment in Queens Criminal Court on a complaint charging him with robbery in the first and second degree, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree. If convicted, Perez faces up to 25 years in prison.
According to the charges, said District Attorney Katz, on Sunday, July 25, 2021, at approximately 8:45 a.m. the 11-year-old victim was walking on 86th Street near Northern Boulevard on her way to a nearby grocery store. The defendant approached her and allegedly pressed a sharp metal object against her neck inflicting a laceration. Perez then pulled the child to a nearby alleyway and pushed her causing her to fall to the ground. During the attack, the defendant threatened to kill her and violate her if she didn’t stop screaming. Defendant Perez took the victims’ keys, money and her bag and fled.
The victim was taken to a local Queens hospital where she was treated for a laceration to her neck sustained during the attack.
Assistant District Attorney Lauren Parson of the District Attorney’s Special Victims Bureau is prosecuting the case under the supervision of Assistant District Attorneys Eric C. Rosenbaum, Bureau Chief, Debra Lynn Pomodore and Brian C. Hughes, Deputy Bureau Chiefs, and under the overall supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Daniel A. Saunders.
