Woman critical after shooting on Highway 90 in Florida Panhandle, Sheriff thinks she was targeted

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, FL At least one person is in critical condition after dozens of shots were fired on Highway 90 near Defuniak Springs.  Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson is now asking for the public’s help in solving the crime.

“One person is severely injured after a shooting where more than a dozen shots were fired late Sunday evening near Fairfield Drive and U.S. Highway 90,” Adkinson said. “Witnesses to the incident were unable to determine the make and model of the shooter’s vehicle which fled the scene traveling east on Highway 90.”

At 8:00 pm last night, the Walton County 9-1-1 center received a call about multiple shots fired on Highway 90, several miles west of Defuniak Springs.

Arriving deputies found a victim who was gravely injured.  Adkinson said the victim is in critical condition in a level one trauma center.

“There were multiple rounds fired, at least 14 rounds struck the vehicle,” he added, saying two individuals may have been involved in the shooting.

According to the victim, she was approached from behind by another vehicle that began firing on her vehicle and continued firing numerous rounds striking the victim.  After she stopped, the shooters returned to the victims car and began shooting more.

“This did not happen in an area without people,” Adkinson said. Now he wants people with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.  “If you were traveling down US 90 last night and saw something out of the ordinary, reach out and call us.”

“We do not believe this is random,” he added. “We believe this is targeted.”

Walton County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Technicians processed the scene into the early morning hours Monday collecting shell casings and bullet fragments stretching west down Highway 90 from Owens Road to west of Fairfield (approximately 2/10 of a mile).
