“Many thousands” of Afghanistan refugees at New Jersey’s Joint Base MDL

TRENTON, NJ – New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy today confirmed there are “many thousands” of refugees from Afghanistan lodged temporarily at New Jersey’s Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in central New Jersey.

“On Afghan refugees, we’ll probably at some point, sooner than later give a more comprehensive update on where we stand on that, but it’s many thousands,” Murphy said. “We have been working intensely across the whole range of government…and we have been doing everything we have been doing everything we can to be a full partner.”

Murphy said now that the original wave has come in, he expects to see a more regular process, adding several hundred will eventually resettle in New Jersey.

“That’s something that is both our obligation and responsibility,” Murphy said.

The Joint Base MDL media officers have released little if any information regarding the settlement and have not allowed the media access to the facility. Joint Base MDL is expected to accommodate 9,500 refugees during the process.
