He pretty much did say it, though is his press secretary who is the media interface to the President directly. While he did not say he didn’t want to unify Americans, he did in fact say that he did not run on a platform to unite Democrats and Republicans in Congress and the Senate. Those elected officials are representatives of the people they serve. Yes, in a roundabout way, he said it, in so many words.
